    Pick and Pack Pricing Explained

We do not publish a rate card, and you should be skeptical of anyone who does. Here is exactly what drives pick and pack cost, how quotes are structured, and which line items quietly inflate an invoice.

Why Published Pick and Pack Rates Are Misleading

A headline 'per order' rate means nothing without knowing what it includes. Two quotes at the same order fee can differ by double once receiving, storage, packaging materials, and surcharges land. A useful quote starts from your actual order profile — average units per order, SKU count, box mix, and monthly volume — which is why we scope before we price.

Many clients also pair this with E-Commerce Fulfillment LA, E-Commerce Fulfillment CA, and Pick & Pack Fulfillment LA.

    Order Fee (Base Pick)

Covers the first pick on an order plus standard pack labor. Driven by how many orders you ship per month and how consistent they are.

    Additional Pick Fee

Each extra unit or SKU on the same order. Multi-item orders cost more to pick, so your average units-per-order matters enormously.

    Receiving & Putaway

Charged by pallet, carton, or hour. Floor-loaded containers and unlabeled goods cost more to receive than clean palletized freight.

    Storage

Typically per pallet or per bin, per month. Turn rate matters — slow-moving inventory is a storage problem before it is a fulfillment problem.

    Packaging Materials

Boxes, mailers, void fill, and tape. Branded or oversized packaging carries a real cost that generic rate cards tend to omit.

    Shipping & Surcharges

Carrier rates plus dimensional weight, residential, and fuel surcharges. Warehouse location changes zone cost more than most brands expect.

How to Compare Two 3PL Quotes Fairly

Take one real month of your order history and run it through both quotes line by line. Not a hypothetical average order — an actual export of your orders, with real unit counts and real destinations. Averages hide the multi-item orders that generate additional pick fees, and they hide the oversized items that trigger dimensional weight.

Then ask both providers the same set of questions in writing: what triggers an extra fee, what the minimum monthly charge is, how storage is measured, whether packaging is billed at cost or with a markup, and what happens during peak season. The gap between the answers is usually more informative than the gap between the rates.

The Hidden Fees Worth Asking About

Account or platform fees, minimum monthly spend, long-term storage penalties, receiving fees for non-conforming freight, returns handling, special project labor rates, and peak-season surcharges. None of these are unreasonable on their own — a warehouse has real costs. The problem is when they are disclosed after signing.

Location is the fee nobody lists. A warehouse far from the port adds a drayage move on every import container, and a warehouse far from your customers adds a shipping zone to every parcel. Our Vernon facility sits roughly 30 minutes from the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, which removes a transfer leg on inbound freight, and it reaches most of California in ground zone 1 or 2 on the way out.

What We Need to Quote You Accurately

Monthly order volume, average units per order, total active SKU count, product dimensions and weights, how inventory arrives (containers, LTL, parcel), your sales channels, and any retail compliance requirements. That is usually a fifteen-minute conversation and one spreadsheet.

With that in hand we can give you a firm, itemized quote rather than a teaser rate that changes on the first invoice. If we are not the right fit for your profile, we will say so directly instead of quoting a number to keep you in the funnel.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Because a single published number cannot describe the cost of a real operation. Order profile, SKU count, packaging, and inbound freight condition move the true cost per order dramatically, so a posted rate would mislead more people than it helps.

Usually the first pick on the order plus standard pack labor. Additional units, packaging materials, receiving, storage, and shipping are generally separate line items.

A charge for each unit or SKU beyond the first on the same order. It is why your average units-per-order is one of the most important numbers in any quote comparison.

Most commonly per pallet or per bin location per month. Some providers also apply long-term storage penalties on inventory that sits beyond a set aging threshold.

Account minimums, platform or technology fees, non-conforming receiving fees, returns processing, special project labor, long-term storage penalties, and peak-season surcharges.

Send us a month of order history plus your SKU dimensions and inbound freight profile. We will return an itemized quote, typically within a couple of business days.
