Do 3PLs require long-term contracts?
Short answer
Many 3PLs do require one- to three-year agreements with monthly minimums, auto-renewal and notice periods. They aren't universal. Logix operates month to month with no long-term lock-in — the terms that matter most are the notice period, the minimum, and how your inventory is released if you leave.
Why long contracts exist
Onboarding a client costs a warehouse real money — integration work, SKU setup, slotting, training. Asset-light 3PLs that lease space from third parties also have to commit to that space in advance, so they push that commitment down to you.
A 3PL that owns its building has more flexibility, because unused space isn't a lease payment to someone else. That's a structural difference, not a sales posture.
The clauses that actually matter
Read past the rate table. These are the terms that determine how much freedom you have a year from now.
- Term length and auto-renewal — does it silently roll into another year?
- Notice period for termination, and whether notice can only be given in a window
- Monthly minimum spend, and whether it escalates
- Rate escalators — annual increases, fuel surcharges, peak surcharges
- Inventory release terms — how fast can you get your goods out, and at what cost?
- Liability limits and insurance requirements for your inventory
- Service level commitments, and what happens when they're missed
The inventory release clause is the real lock-in
A contract term you can wait out is an inconvenience. An unfavorable inventory release clause is a hostage situation. Some agreements allow the warehouse to hold goods against disputed charges, or to charge substantial per-pallet fees to load out. Confirm in writing how quickly inventory can be released and what it costs before you sign anything.
How Logix does it
We operate month to month. No multi-year term, no auto-renewal trap, and no exit penalty for taking your inventory elsewhere. We own the 214,000 sq ft Vernon facility, so we don't need a long contract to justify the space — we'd rather earn the account every month.
That also changes the incentive structure: a 3PL that can't lock you in has to keep hitting its accuracy and ship-time numbers.
