How long does 3PL onboarding take?

    Short answer

A straightforward e-commerce brand can be live with a new 3PL in about seven days: integration and SKU setup in the first few days, inventory arriving mid-week, and first orders shipping by the end of the week. Complex EDI or retail-compliance accounts typically take two to four weeks.

    The standard seven-day timeline

Most direct-to-consumer brands follow the same path, and the schedule only slips when data is missing.

    • Day 1 — Kickoff call, account setup, and connection of your sales channels via native integration or API
    • Day 2 — SKU catalog import: dimensions, weights, barcodes, packaging rules and any kitting definitions
    • Day 3 — Test orders pushed through end to end, including tracking write-back to your store
    • Days 3–5 — Inventory arrives and is received, counted and put away
    • Day 5 — Packaging and insert rules confirmed, carrier mapping and rate shopping configured
    • Days 6–7 — Go live; first real orders pick, pack and ship

    What makes onboarding take longer

EDI-based retail accounts add time because trading partner setup, testing and certification are controlled by the retailer, not the 3PL. Expect two to four weeks for a Walmart, Target or Costco program. Kitting-heavy or subscription accounts need extra time to define and test build instructions. Regulated products may require lot tracking or FEFO rules configured before the first receipt.

The other common delay is inventory transfer from an incumbent 3PL. Warehouses release inventory on their own schedule, and some require notice periods. Start that conversation before you sign anywhere new.

What your new 3PL needs from you on day one

Have this ready and the timeline holds.

    • Complete SKU list with barcodes, dimensions and weights
    • Admin access or an API key for each sales channel
    • Historical order export — ideally 3 to 12 months
    • Packaging specification and any branded inserts
    • Special handling rules: fragile, lot-controlled, serialized, hazmat
    • Retail routing guides for any wholesale accounts

    Running parallel during the switch

You don't have to flip a switch overnight. Most brands run split inventory for two to three weeks — the old 3PL continues fulfilling while the new one receives and validates. Once accuracy and ship times look right, you route all orders to the new facility and draw the old inventory down.

Logix assigns a named account manager on day one who owns the entire onboarding, and we operate month to month, so nothing about the transition is a long-term bet.
