What does pick and pack mean?
Short answer
Pick and pack is the core fulfillment process: an order arrives, a picker pulls the exact items from their storage locations, a packer verifies them by barcode scan, and the order is boxed, labeled and handed to a carrier. It's billed per order plus a smaller charge per additional item.
The six steps of a pick and pack cycle
The process looks simple from the outside; the accuracy comes from the verification steps in the middle.
- Order import — the order flows from Shopify, Amazon, Walmart, TikTok Shop or an ERP into the WMS
- Pick list generation — the WMS assigns items to a picker and routes them by location
- Picking — the picker scans each item's barcode at the shelf, confirming SKU and quantity
- Packing — a second scan verifies contents against the order before the box is sealed
- Labeling — rate shopping selects the carrier and service, and the label prints
- Manifest and handoff — the parcel is manifested and staged for the day's carrier pickup
Picking methods and when each is used
Different order profiles call for different picking strategies, and a good 3PL switches between them rather than forcing everything through one method.
- Discrete picking — one picker, one order at a time. Best for large or complex orders.
- Batch picking — one pass pulls the same SKU for many orders. Best for single-item, high-volume drops.
- Zone picking — pickers own an area and hand off. Best for large SKU counts.
- Wave picking — orders released in groups tied to carrier cutoff times.
- Cluster picking — multiple orders picked simultaneously into separated totes.
How accuracy is actually enforced
Order accuracy is not a matter of care; it's a matter of scanning. A barcode-verified pick and a barcode-verified pack mean an incorrect item has to survive two independent checks to reach a customer. Add cycle counting to keep on-hand quantities honest, and 99.9% accuracy becomes a process outcome rather than an aspiration.
Weight verification catches what scanning misses. If a packed carton's actual weight deviates from its expected weight, it's pulled and re-checked before it ships.
Same-day shipping and carrier cutoffs
Same-day shipping means an order received before a stated cutoff leaves the building that day. The cutoff exists because carriers pick up on a fixed schedule. UPS, FedEx, USPS and regional carriers all pull from our Vernon docks daily, and our cutoff for same-day is 2:00 PM Pacific, Monday through Friday.
Shipping from Los Angeles has a structural advantage here: the entire West Coast is within one to two ground days, so a same-day pack often lands as a next-day delivery without paying for air.
